The scissor lifts are still moving throughout the day. (There are two of them now.) It's not a very annoying sound if you're not reading or watching a movie or doing anything that requires a lot of concentration. I could read for a couple hours this morning even with the sound going. But after about four hours you just get too tired to keep going. You need an extra amount of energy when dealing with that sort of intermittent yet constant noise. It takes energy to get back into a book, even for thirty seconds, after having to hear the beeping from the scissor lift.

I came across this super-long paragraph in the book, and it's clear that I run out of steam in terms of subvocalizing after a while. By the time I got to the final line I couldn't hear any of the sounds in my head anymore. So apparently it's something that needs to be reloaded.
